the nanny state

This week The Stu Pitt Award goes to ...

The government

for becoming a Nanny State

The Food and Drug Administration announced on Tuesday, June 25, 2013, that they have taken the first steps in regulating cigarette and tobacco products under the authority of the Obama administration. This would be the first time the FDA has taken jurisdiction over the topic since Congress gave them that right in 2009.

"This is the first time in history that a federal agency has told (tobacco) companies that they could not market a new or modified cigarette (product) because of the public health problems they pose," said Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, the New York Times continued."

My comments
Hmm. Is this another "slippery slope"? Does it mean that the government can now dictate to the private sector what products are produced and marketed for private consumption? If so, that is a dangerous precedent ... one that brings us ever closer to the end of capitalism, and the end of freedom.

Is there ANY area of American life where the government has NOT intruded? They are already in our

living room (light bulbs)

bathroom (low flow toilets and shower heads)

bedroom (mattress tags)

garage (mpg standards)

schools (funding)

bodies (Obama Care)

sex lives (free condoms, morning after pill for 15 year-olds, abortion)

electronics devices (phone taxes et al)

communication (collecting everyone's phone records, email records, et al)

garbage (recycling batteries, banning plastic bags et al)

Taxes on everything: gas, cigarettes, liquor, income et al

Is there ANY area where the government can not, or will not, intrude? No.

Welcome to the New America. Where government decides what you can and cannot do and individual freedom and independence are no longer guaranteed under the founding document of America, the United States Constitution. Where the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, under the Declaration of Independence, is not longer a right, it's an illusion. Welcome to the New America, a nanny state.

Nanny state is defined by as "a government perceived as authoritarian, interfering, or overprotective".

America. A Nanny State. The Founding Fathers would be appalled, ashamed, and angry. Very very angry.

Congratulations America, you are now a Nanny State. And for that you deservedly earned this week's Stu Pitt Award!

"It is the duty of the patriot to protect
his country from its government."

- Thomas Paine, American patriot (1737 - 1809)
